Entering the Field Without Questions Yahya Al-Abdullah

The question of positionality is central to the ethnographic research. One popular approach is finding the balance between observation and participation or between distance and proximity (Bensa 1995) and (Naepels, 1998). However, this could be limiting based on the nature of the fieldwork (Kusenbach, 2003). What we are witnessing nowadays is a growth of the militant or double commitment ethnographic research (Le Courant, 2013). This kind of work requires flexibility and adaptability rather than following the roles and standards of the classical methodology. In this intervention, I will shed the light on my filed work experience with a displaced Syrian ethnic minority known as the Syrian Doms, a precarious group that lived in the margins while in Syria and are re-positioned on the margins or within the spectrum of « undeserving migrants » in Istanbul and in Paris. I will attempt to make a comparison between what I call the « failing attempt » to conduct fieldwork in Istanbul and the challenges in wearing different casquettes while conducting the ethnographic work, such as the researcher, the volunteer, the activists and above all the exiled Syrian. Finally, I will visit the question of ethics in and morals in a researching a vulnerable migrant group (Armbruster Laerke, 2008, Becker, 1967) and the emotional burden that accompanies that.

Research on Afghan Refugees in France : Challenges and OpportunitiesRohullah Sidiqullah

Many research projects are now focusing on the situation of Afghan refugees in Exile for various reasons. Research amongst the Diaspora poses specific ethical challenges. I will talk about the challenges and difficulties I have faced as a researcher while conducting my field work among a diverse and complex group of refugees. I will talk about my experience having certain advantages and disadvantages while conducting this research. Language plays an important role in doing research in such a demanding field. It is equally important to have enough cultural and background knowledge about your subject of study. When dealing with immigrants coming from ethnic conflicts, especially intra-state ones, it is important to take into account the impact of the conflict’s motivation, and to remember that when national identity is at stake, and when positive peace is hard to achieve, memory takes precedence over the present and is usually used to fuel a belligerent environment (Laurenn, Guyot, 2011 : 139). How a researcher positons himself in this kind of context, what strategies and methodologies are required or used. These are very crucial elements in this type of work. How we approach an Afghan refugee, how we develop our relationship that leads to a good dialogues and interviews ?

Présentation des intervenants :

Yahya Al-Abdullah is currently a doctoral student in social anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. He contributes actively to conversations around Syrian migration in Lebanon, on the route to Europe in Turkey, and in France. Yahya’s work centers on practices and policies of migrant integration. Prior to his PhD, Yahya obtained a master’s degree in public policy and public administration from the Central European University in Budapest where he also worked in an educational program to integrate refugees and asylum seekers in higher education in Europe. Yahya also has a master’s degree in TESOL from the University of Aleppo and has worked as a teacher of English and Arabic as foreign languages in five different countries.

Rohullah Sidiqullah travaille actuellement sur un double master SciencesPo/Inalco sur la question de système d’intégration des refugiés afghans intitulée The integration system in France : The social, cultural and administrative challenges and difficulties of Afghan refugees.
